STEAMfest 2018 on October 20

STEAMfest 2018 will be held Saturday, October 20, at the Oakdale Mall from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Youth-serving organizations, schools, student clubs, afterschool/out-of-school-time programs and makers throughout Broome County will participate.  Families are encouraged to attend. Admission is free.

STEAMfest features interactive “maker” stations where young people can learn about exciting STEAM careers through hands-on activities.  Build a robot, build your own city with WSKG’s Bob the Builder, become a mural artist,  create magical creatures with LED light-up eyes, make your own ice cream, make your own keychain on 3-D printers or discover how plants make music!

STEAMfest 2018 brings together afterschool/out-of-school-time providers, makers, business and industry to highlight Science, Technology, Engineering Art/Agriculture and Math innovation and career pathways for young people throughout Broome County.

STEAMfest is hosted by the Expanded Learning Network, a regional chapter of the New York State Network for Youth Success.  The event highlights the important role high quality, out-of-school time programs play in preparing young people to success in school, college, work and life, and celebrates National Lights On Afterschool Week.

STEAMfest 2018 is sponsored by the United Way of Broome County, Community Foundation of South Central New York, Eastern Southern Tier STEM Hub, New York State Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, Empire State Afterschool Program, Broome-Tioga BOCES, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County, Expanded Learning Network, New York State Network for Youth Success, Broome County Promise Zone, State Farm Insurance Binghamton and Marchuska Brothers Construction, LLC.

Juvenile crime rates escalate between the hours of 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. Afterschool programs keep young people safe when the school day ends. Youth in afterschool programs are less likely to engage in criminal activity, including substance abuse.  Afterschool programs lead to academic success.  Regular attendance in a high-quality afterschool program is linked to higher scores on standardized tests.

Join the celebration and learn about all the high quality afterschool programs in our community.  See you at STEAMfest 2018, October 20!
