Hornet Academy Continues

Some Windsor 8th graders can continue to get a taste of college while exploring a menu of career options at SUNY Broome’s Hornet Academy.
The third of four four-week sessions this school year will begin on January 20th at SUNY Broome. This session will run through March 9. The fourth session will be from April 13th through May 11th.

This latest session will feature computer science, computer technology, phlebotomy, pharmacy, social media marketing, sports studies, web development, and civic engagement.

“Our hope is that we introduce them to a career they didn't know about, or they learn more about careers they do know about. We've also been intentional with our program selection to include all our divisions, a large number of our programs, in-demand careers, and programs that align with Future Ready Knights on Windsor's end,” said Danielle Britton, SUNY Broome’s Director of Training, Education and Workforce Development.

Windsor’s Future Ready Knights program allows students to explore pathways in ten career fields: business and finance, biomedical science, computer science, agriculture, education, fine arts, human services, career and technical education, construction trades, and engineering. Counselors recruit students based on career interests they’ve already expressed.

“Students are exposed to careers they may not even know about. It’s exposure and the people leading the sessions are SUNY Broome professors with expertise in these areas. It gives students exposure to college and allows them to explore careers,” said Windsor Central Middle School school counselor Andrea White. “I think the kids who have gone have really enjoyed it. I’m hoping we get a new batch this time around.”
