Engineering Expo

On Saturday, November 15, Mrs. White and Mr. Strahley took 16 girls in 7th and 8th grade to Lockheed Martin for the Girls In Engineering expo.  The afternoon visit to the facility in Owego was filled with hands-on session where the girls ma...de paper rockets to learn about aerodynamics, built a windmill to learn about gears, and experimented with Snap Kits to learn about electricity.  The girls were also able to tour the hangar to see the helicopters made by Lockheed Martin, who sponsored the event in order to promote STEM among middle school girls.  Jaylen Bennett and Jenna Adams won t-shirts for having the longest flight of their rocket (which they named “The Kocak” after their Science teacher), but there’s no telling how far the rocket made by Sydney Christensen and Morgan Ferguson would have flown if it had not crashed into the engineer recording distances!  Obviously, the girls enjoyed their day and learned a great deal about engineering.
