Recognizing Kindness

There are a lot of reasons children love birthdays. That’s the day they receive extra attention, presents, and, in many cases, cash.

For his past few birthdays, Palmer Elementary 5th grader Rowan Rice has taken that cash and given it away to those in need, both in Palmer and the greater community, to make sure others have gifts on Christmas.

“I wanted other people to feel happy,” said Rowan.
Rowan’s efforts led to his designation as an Akshar All-Star, a program by New York State Senator Fred Akshar to recognize students who show leadership, compassion, school spirit, or improvement amongst their peers. Rowan is the Windsor Central School District’s recipient of the award.

“I didn’t realize that doing what I do makes a big difference, but now I do,” said Rowan.

Rowan’s good deeds aren’t limited to giving away his birthday money. Each spring, Rowan clears sticks from the yards of elderly neighbors who spend the winter down south.

“They are good neighbors to us, so I want to help them back,” said Rowan. “When you help someone, you don’t always get something in return.”
