Connecting to a Crisis

A crisis half a world away has hit home for some Windsor students.
Water for South Sudan representative Cheri Crist spoke to students in Mrs. Miller’s 7th grade Academic Support class the Monday before Thanksgiving via Zoom. She spoke about how students could help Africa’s water crisis. 7th grade students are reading A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park where the main character, Salva Dut, must flee his town in Southern Sudan in order to escape the war.

Dut became the founder for Water for South Sudan, which drills wells to provide safe, fresh water to remote villages of his native land, South Sudan, one of the world's poorest regions. The foundation has drilled over 571 new wells, rehabilitated 321 wells, and given almost 700 hygiene trainings.  Schools around the country can help by participating in the organization’s Iron Giraffe challenge.  A $2.00 donation can provide water for one year.

“This was a great way to help students connect to the novel and understand more about the water crisis,” said Mrs. Miller.
