Windsor CSD Summer Program Update - July 23
Windsor Strong Academy students used chickens, vegetables, and strategy to try to find the winning recipe on Wednesday.
This week’s theme at Windsor Strong Academy is "From Garden to Greatness." Students are preparing a meal that includes a salad, entrée, and dessert. Some students cooked on Tuesday and others on Wednesday. All students will present their meals on Thursday.
The students also need to create table settings. The Windsor FFA (Future Farmers of America) chapter donated chickens, vegetables, and herbs from the district’s Land Lab for the students to use. They are also donating flowers for the floral arrangements that will accompany the meals. Knight Lights campers rotated between four STEM stations:
- Creating lava lamps to illustrate a lesson in density.
- Using shaving cream, food coloring, and water to create rain clouds to teach evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.
- Creating “volcanoes” with baking soda, dish soap, and vinegar to teach the reaction of acids and bases.
- Making “elephant toothpaste” with hydrogen peroxide and yeast to show a lesson in chemical reactions, decomposition, and catalysts.
Rising Windsor Central High School senior Abigail Criddle spoke to Knight Lights campers about WCHS’ biomedical pathway. She also taught a lesson in the importance of hand washing with a glo-germ test, showing students’ hands under UV light. Some campers also continued building with Minecraft blocks as part of a lesson on area and perimeter.
Baseball, softball, and lacrosse camps continued on Wednesday.
Baseball players worked on their hitting approaches, learning what pitches to look for in which counts. They also continued practicing their footwork while fielding ground balls, and bunting fundamentals. Players finished Wednesday’s camp with a scrimmage and a trip to the WCHS pool.
Softball players worked on their quickness and decision-making by playing tic-tac-toe and trying to fill squares made out of bats with gloves and balls. They also practiced hitting and finished by playing catch with water balloons.
Lacrosse campers worked through four stations: shooting, a star drill to practice passing and catching, a keep-away competition to learn communication and passing on the run, and wall ball to learn how to catch balls from different angles. Lacrosse campers also finished the day at the WCHS pool.
