Raymond Corp. Visits Welding Class
Welding students in Windsor Central High School’s Agriculture program got an up-close look at what could be the first step in their career.

Representatives from Raymond Corporation visited the welding class and explained the professional opportunities available at the company.

“We have one of the largest welding shops in New York state. Raymond is growing and we’ve been growing. We need good welders,” said John Sassani, Human Resources Manager at the Raymond Corporation. “We’re always going to need good MIG (metal inert gas) welders. There’s great opportunity to join a world-class organization.”

During the visit, one of Raymond’s top welders performed a demonstration. Sassani also held a Q-and-A session with the students, discussing job opportunities available after graduation, and the benefits Raymond Corporation offers, including tuition assistance. Raymond Corporation is one of the largest employers of welders in New York State.

“This is an exciting opportunity for students to gain first-hand knowledge of Raymond Corporation and see a professional welder working his craft. For beginning welders looking to be certified, like our students are, the Raymond Corporation offers a great opportunity,” said WCHS Agriculture Teacher Tina James.

“You can have a great career at Raymond, whether you prefer to weld your entire career or do something else. We have examples of people who began their careers as welders and were promoted from there. We focus on internal promotion,” said Sassani.

“It’s cool to see that the opportunities are there. You just have to work for them,” said welding student Daniel Newman. “You don’t have to go into just one field. There’s not just one thing. There’s 100 different things.”

The visit is part of the Windsor Central School District’s implementation of its C.O.R.E., or Career Opportunities in Rural Education, grant. The grant is also making possible other scheduled career-opportunity events this school year. These include a visit from a Grass-Fed Beef Procurement/Buyer at Meyer Natural, and trips to the Catskill Fish Hatchery, and the Catskill Cattle Company.
