Windsor Teams Take Top Spots in Engineering Challenge
Of the 20 teams from around the area that took part, two Project Lead the Way teams from Windsor elementary schools finished in the top three at the Fluor Engineering Design Challenge, hosted by the Kopernik Observatory and Science Center in Vestal.

The teams needed to meet the challenge of designing and building a device to launch an aluminum ball the greatest possible distance, measured in centimeters. Each supply used was assessed a negative point value that was subtracted from the overall distance achieved, thus propelling students to come up with a design using the fewest allowable materials.

The team of 5th graders Ryan Kristof and Max DeVoe from Bell Elementary took first place. The pair of 5th graders Andrew Munson and Gaven Lang from Palmer Elementary took third place.

"Students had to carefully weigh the benefit of using each construction material against the disadvantage of the point loss in distance that that material would incur. Tough decisions had to be made, keeping the end goal in mind. It was fascinating listening to them deliberate," said Project Lead the Way teacher Eileen Mulcahy.
