Rathmell Returns to Windsor for Basketball Camp Visit

Windsor Central High School graduate and national championship-winning basketball coach Dan Rathmell returned to his alma mater to share important ways students can improve on and off the court at the Windsor Basketball Camp.

Rathmell, a 2000 Windsor graduate, will begin his ninth season as the basketball coach at Davis College where he won the Bible College National Championship in 2011, 2013 and 2015. He is also the school’s Athletic Director.

“This is awesome,” said Rathmell about his visit. “I’ve been telling (Windsor basketball coach) Duncan Paddick to let me know when I can come by and help.”

Rathmell began his talk to the students with a tip to improve their shooting. He then transitioned to a piece of advice meant to make them better players and people. It’s a formula he calls E+R=O, event plus response equals outcome.

When a life event happens he says you should press pause and evaluate the situation. Then get your mind right and get rid of negativity. Finally, you should step up to the challenge.

“In coaching I see a lot of kids from broken families, broken structures. I’ve seen kids who don’t know how to respond. Forget basketball, these principals help in life so I wanted to share that with them,” said Rathmell.

“The kids get to see someone who was successful here who has gone on to have success elsewhere,” said Paddick. “He’s a college coach who can take his experience with his players and share it with these kids.”

After graduating from Windsor Rathmell played at Susquehanna University. He was an assistant coach at one year at SUNY Broome before moving to Davis College. He lives with his wife and two children in Windsor.

“These guys have heard about the success of Windsor basketball. Now they get to put a face to a name,” said Paddick.

Rathmell’s visit comes on the penultimate day of the two-week camp. Camp finishes July 20th with 5-on-5 tournament championship games for both the younger campers (entering grades 4-6) and older players (entering grades 7-9).
