Lessons From the Farm

Winsor Acres became a classroom as the youngest campers at Knight Lights spent the morning touring the farm and tasting its product.

Students rotated between the tour, the tasting station and the butter station, where campers shook heavy cream in covered plastic cups until it became butter.

The tour included a visit with the cows, calves and to the milking floor.

“We want them to research what a farm does and why it’s important. Farming is a big part of Windsor,” said teacher Kim Crisanti.

“It was amazing seeing the little baby cows, making the butter and tasting the butter,” said incoming 3rd grader Mallory Mooney.

Students also tasted milk, cheese and yogurt.

“The milk tasted good. The yogurt wasn’t for me,” said incoming 2nd grader Paige Semcho.

Older Knight Lights campers will make the same trip to Winsor Acres on Thursday. This week is animal sciences week at Knight Lights. The week kicked off with a visit from dairy goats when students compared cardiovascular and respiratory function between humans and animals.
