Summer Camp Recap - July 16

As Windsor Strong students spend the summer exploring what it means to be future-ready, they heard from a former Black Knight who seems to have figured it out.

Keith Hughes, a 2012 WCHS graduate, earned an associate’s degree from SUNY Broome, and a bachelor’s degree from Cornell after leaving Windsor. He will attend Binghamton University’s School of Pharmacy next month, beginning a four-year program that will allow him to earn a doctorate in pharmacy.

“I wasn’t a valedictorian at Windsor. I got a 3.85 (GPA) at SUNY Broome. It’s good, but not a 4.0,” said Hughes. “It doesn’t matter where you start. As long as you have goals and focus, you can achieve anything.”

He shared some of the lessons he has learned as well.

“Making connections is important. I failed to do that here and at SUNY Broome. But, I learned it at Cornell. My roommate said his brother knew someone from a fraternity who helped him get a job on Wall Street. I said to myself, ‘Whoa, so connections can actually get you where you want to be,’” said Hughes.

Hughes eventually wants to become a clinical pharmacist at a childhood cancer clinic.

Windsor Strong students also toured the high school campus to see the progress of the District’s latest capital project. They will hear from more speakers on Wednesday.

Athletic camps continued Tuesday. Basketball players went through 3-on-2 and 2-on-1 shooting drills. Wrestling campers continued to work on takedowns, turns, escapes, reversals, and combat moves. Asa Dougherty was also crowned Day 1’s Camper of the Day.

“We’re trying to break the kids into the sport. It’s a mini-recruitment opportunity. I see three to four new faces here,” said wrestling coach Jeff Nolan. “With the games we’re playing, they’ll have an idea of how to hand fight, push and pull, and get to those takedown moves.”

Students in the 4H/Future Farmers of America camp spent the morning making plant jewelry and exploring trails on the high school campus, identifying different species of trees and the role they play in the ecosystem.

Speaking of ecosystems, some Knight Lights campers studied which living organisms are composers, consumers, and producers. Others learned about healthy food choices and portion control, while another group spent the morning in the high school pool.
