Putting the Fun in Fundraiser

Students and families at Bell Elementary had fun and fought cancer a few cents at a time at the school’s annual Coin Carnival Monday night. The event is a major fundraiser for the school’s Pennies for Patients campaign, which raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society.

“This brings families in to enjoy the fun and raise money for the cause. Last year, this event alone raised over $400,” said teacher Kristen Sellitto. That was part of the school’s effort which raised over $2,400 last year.

This year, the goal is $1,800. During the Coin Carnival, students donated a coin of any denomination to play one of 11 games. In addition to the Coin Carnival, the school is raffling off a big-screen TV and holding a number of games for students, such as a wishing well, teacher guessing game and guessing jar.

The Pennies for Patients period ends at a student assembly March 29th, when student council president Gia Sacco will receive one of three “punishments” students donated to choose as part of the fundraising effort: kiss a mystery animal, courtesy of Animal Adventure, take a pie in the face, or have a balloon full of slime dropped on her.

“We’re raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help children with cancer. It makes me happy knowing that what we are doing is helping kids in need,” said student council member Claire Griffin.
