Evans & Spicer Advance in Skills USA

Two WCHS seniors will compete in the State Finals of the Skills USA competition after strong performances at the Regional Conference at SUNY Morrisville on February 8th. Senior Justin Spicer finished second in video production. Max Evans finished first in cabinet making for the second straight year.

“I’ve practiced half the year making cabinets in shop at school and I’ll keep doing that to prepare for States to get more accurate and efficient,” said Evans, who finished second in the state competition last year.

Evans is making his second trip to the state competition, Spicer his first, though he’s in his second year in the video production program at Broome-Tioga BOCES.

“I just love editing and working with the cameras,” said Spicer. “When I visited BOCES as a sophomore, it just felt right.”

Spicer hopes a strong performance at the state event can help him take his next step after graduation.

“Whether it’s scholarship opportunities or work opportunities, Skills USA will be huge for me to put on my resume,” said Spicer.

Evans would like to pursue an apprenticeship after graduation.

“I want to be a finished carpenter, working on homes. My work making cabinets has taught me that. I like to work on the fine details,” said Evans.
The NYS SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships is April 24-26 at the NYS Fairgrounds in Syracuse, NY.
