Gary Vail to be Inducted into NYS Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame

The Windsor Central School District is proud to announce that former Athletic Director and boys basketball coach Gary Vail will be inducted into the New York State Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. The induction will take place at 10:00am on Sunday, March 24, 2019 in the Heritage Hall of the Glens Falls Civic Center.

“It’s a great honor and a great honor for the program,” said Mr. Vail. “I had a lot of great kids, a lot of great coaches and a program that worked. It was a culmination of a lot of hard work by people who were involved, and that’s why we were successful.”

Mr. Vail began teaching Physical Education at Windsor in 1969 and remained with the District for 35 years, before retiring in 2004. During his time at Windsor, Mr. Vail was the Director of Physical Education and Athletics for 25 years.

Mr. Vail coached JV and Varsity baseball for a total of 30 years and basketball for 35 years.  His true passion was basketball. Under his guidance, the Black Knights won 11 league championships, three Section IV Championships, 16 Tournament Championships and 423 games.  Mr. Vail had accumulated nearly 1000 wins in various sports by the time of his retirement.  

Mr. Vail has continued to remain true to his life-long love of athletics and teaching since his retirement.  He has directed the Binghamton University Basketball School, been an adjunct professor at BU, supervisor for SUNY Cortland physical education student teachers, a trainer for Youth Sports NY and continues to be a member of multiple state and national organizations.  Mr. Vail and his wife, Sue, raised their two daughters, Julie and Kelly in Windsor and still reside there.
