Harting Donates Photo Contest Winnings to Charity

Kira Harting earned herself some fans with her first-place finish in the Preservation Association of the Southern Tier’s (PAST) photo contest. The “Country Style, The Rural Architecture of Broome and Tioga Counties" contest judged photos showcasing the rural architecture of Broome and Tioga Counties.

“Someone came up to me in a store in Binghamton and said, ‘Hey, you won that photo contest. Congratulations,’” said Harting, a 7th grader at Windsor Central Middle School.

But, what she did next is winning her new fans. She donated her entire $100 prize to Every Dogs Dream Adoption Center.

“I didn’t have any uses for $100 other than donating it. I thought that would be a good thing to do,” said Harting.

The cause is close to her heart. Harting has six dogs. She was inspired by a YouTube channel which features people who make sweaters, then take the proceeds from those sweaters and donate them to animal charities.

The Broome County Arts Council exhibited Harting’s photo, as well as those of other contest winners, at its Binghamton gallery during the month of December. Her donation is making the impact of her photo last far longer.
