5th Annual Middle School Kickball Tournament

Dodging raindrops and throws from their opponents, eight teams totaling 64 Windsor Central Middle School students participated in the school’s 5th annual Kickball Tournament. As has been the case in past years, proceeds from the tournament benefitted the Wounded Warrior Project.

“I was really happy that we were doing this,” said 6th grader Maryann Tuttle. “I know Windsor is a good place and we do a lot of this stuff, but this was my first time taking part in a charitable event.”

Tuttle took part so that her friends could field a complete eight-person team.

“Plus, I love kickball,” said Tuttle.

Mr. Dewey’s 7th grade advisory organized the event. Paige Smith was one of the students who made sure the tournament continued this year.

“It’s been a tradition. I mentioned we should do it because we’d be letting people down if we didn’t,” said Smith. “When 6th graders come to the Middle School they say, “I’ve heard of the Volleyball Tournament,’ or, ‘I’ve heard of the Kickball Tournament.’ It’s one of the things that gets kids excited about the Middle School.”

That excitement led to a number of the school’s newest students taking part in the tournament.

“A lot of our teams are made up of 6th graders. The future of this tournament looks good,” said Dewey.

One of the new features of this year’s tournament are the student-designed medals created on the school’s 3-D printer. It took 7th grader Nick Frost to perfect the process.

“We had to go through a number of designs. Making the kickball was easy but sometimes it would fall out, and sometimes it wouldn’t fit. Then we had to print them one at a time,” said Frost.

However, all of the work made an impact. The tournament raised just over $300 for the Wounded Warrior project, and introduced a new group of students who will carry on the tradition of the tournament.
