Trunk or Treat

Almost 600 children from nearly 300 families enjoyed pre-Halloween festivities at the Windsor elementary schools’ Trunk or Treat event at Windsor Central High School Wednesday night.

WCHS Ag teacher Tina James brought a donkey and a calf. Children played games built by the Middle School tech class such as Plinko and cornhole. The POP (Physics Outreach Program) club from Binghamton University had ‘spooky science’ tables, featuring cryogenically frozen marshmallows and cheese puffs.

“It was really cold, and good,” said Bell Elementary 4th grader Dakota Walser.

And, of course, there was candy.

“I think it’s great for the kids and a lot of the families, too,” said Walser’s mother, Keira Hoyte. “The experiments are cool, and the kids like it.”

“This is a great opportunity to show new people what POP is. We want kids to be interested in science,” said Binghamton University student and POP member Jennifer Breneisen.

The Science didn’t end with the POP tables, as children kept walking up the loop in front of WCHS to the animal station Mrs. James created.

“When do these kids have an opportunity to be hands-on with a farm animal? I’ve had more kids kissing that calf and laughing at the donkey tonight,” said Mrs. James.

The children may have been laughing, but parents had their share of smiles as well.

“Parents were asking for some sort of event that would feel normal. So, we put something together that would be COVID-safe,” said Katelyn Lapan, Community Schools Coordinator for the Windsor Central School District. “A lot of people stopped by and said, ‘Thank you. We needed something like this.’”
