Freije Wins NYS Excellence in Teaching Award

Palmer Elementary principal Whitney Freije is the winner of a New York State Excellence in Teaching Award. She is one of five Southern Tier winners announced by the state in the latest round of awardees.

“I was truly shocked to find out that I had won this award. It feels wonderful to be recognized for something that I am so passionate about - making a difference in the lives of kids,” said Mrs. Freije.
The Empire State Excellence in Teaching Program awardees are teachers of science, math, English language arts, social studies, kindergarten, special education, art, physical education, robotics, technology, world languages, economics, English as a new language, and even P-TECH programs.

When Freije applied for this award, she was still in the classroom. She has since transitioned into her new role at Palmer Elementary.

“I am committed to finding new and innovative was to motivate, inspire, and encourage students in this new role as well as to connecting with families and working alongside some of the most dedicated educators to ensure the success of every one of our students,” said Mrs. Freije.

Applicants for the NYS Excellence in Teaching Award need to illustrate how he or she:

  • Exemplifies the dedication, mission, skill, expertise, and talent of outstanding teachers
  • Inspires and motivates all children and makes learning exciting
  • Makes a difference in children's lives
  • Levels the playing field and creates a climate for learning where every child can succeed
  • Holds high expectations for every student and provides access to higher levels of learning for all learners
  • Is preparing children for a changing economic workforce and a lifelong journey of learning
  • Is a continuous learner eager to pursue professional growth opportunities throughout his or her career

“I am always eager to refine my craft and I am really looking forward to the professional learning opportunities that I will be afforded because of this recognition.,” said Mrs. Freije.
