Lessons in Gratitude

Students at Bell, Palmer, and Weeks Elementary schools will head into Thanksgiving break with lessons of gratitude fresh in their minds.

November Spirit Week is taking place at all three schools from November 18-24. Activities include having students create a “Gratitude wall” and writing “Thankful cards” to meaningful people in their lives.

Bell Elementary school counselor Lori Fisher had students write down something they were grateful for involving each of their five senses.

“The research shows the more specific you can be about what you are grateful for, the happier you are. So, we want them to really pay attention to what’s around them,” said Fisher. “It can be the laughter of a friend, or a favorite song. It can be your pet’s fur, a soft blanket, or a hug from a family member.”

Activities weren’t limited to students. Fisher spent Monday morning handing out "Staff Thankful Cards", as Bell teachers wrote why they were thankful for their colleagues.

“We’re role modeling to the students the behavior of being thankful for others,” said Fisher. “I thought timing was good with Thanksgiving, but also how stressed with COVID. We are still surrounded by things we can be thankful for if we stop and pay attention to those things.”
