Week with Professionals at WCHS

Windsor Central High School’s fourth annual Day With Professionals has become a Week with Professionals in 2021. Members of 45 different careers are meeting with WCHS juniors virtually over Zoom from Monday, May 3rd through Friday, May 7th to help students jump start their career exploration.

Among the higher-profile professionals who are helping students explore careers are Broome County District Attorney Michael Korchak, and Binghamton Devils broadcaster and WCHS graduate Rob Lippolis, who recently called his first NHL games for the New Jersey Devils.
Korchak shared how his first job after college was actually in radio. He turned to law after wanting, “a regular life with regular hours.”

“You need to challenge yourself. If you’re going to try something new, do something difficult. I wanted to get the toughest legal job I could,” Korchak told the students. He spent the first seven years of his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in the South Bronx. “I got a lot of great experience.”

“His knowledge about law school is helpful. He is a knowledgeable guy, and he was sharing his education with me,” said Ella Peterson, who wants to become a lawyer. “I want to get there one day, and his advice was so good.”

Junior Nicholas Marra is also interested in a career in law. He didn’t know the D.A.’s office and police departments work closely to build a case.

“I’m more interested (in the law). Learning about the ins and outs of any profession makes it more interesting, if not more appealing,” said Marra.

Professionals are meeting virtually with high school juniors to talk about their professional paths and what the students can do to get the best start in their careers, whether their next step is college or the workforce.

“Week with Professionals is an opportunity for students to meet someone in a field they’re interested in pursuing after high school. It gives students the ability to connect with someone local and begin forming their network” said WCHS Career Counselor Heather Noyd.

This event is part of Windsor’s Future Ready Knights program, which allows students to pursue careers through seven different pathways: Business/Finance, Health Care, Computer Science, Agriculture, Education, Trades, and Engineering, with the help of internships, mentorships, and apprenticeships.
