Professional Help

Members of Windsor Central High School’s junior class took part in the school’s sixth annual Day With Professionals on February 24th. 32 professionals from a range of careers helped students jump start their career exploration. Students spoke either one-one-one or in small groups with each professional.

“Day with Professionals is an opportunity for students to meet someone in a field they’re interested in pursuing after high school. It gives students the ability to connect with someone local and begin forming their network,” said WCHS Career Counselor Heather Noyd.

Broome County District Attorney Michael Korchak headlined the event, speaking with students interested in a career in law. All professionals met with high school juniors to talk about their professional paths and what the students can do to get the best start in their careers, whether their next step is college, the Military, or the workforce.

WCHS junior Tony Zheng wants to become a surgeon. An illness kept the scheduled doctor from attending Day With Professionals, so Tony met instead with a pharmacist and a nurse.

“I got a chance to learn about pharmacists which I never learned about – the classes you have to take in HS and college.  Nursing was interesting. She made her profession sound interesting,” said Zheng.

Zheng intends to take as many college-level and AP classes in high school as he can before finding a college he likes.

“I’m more pumped up for the medical field,” said Zheng.

This event is part of Windsor’s Future Ready Knights program, which allows students to pursue careers through seven different pathways: Business/Finance, Health Care, Computer Science, Agriculture, Education, Trades, and Engineering, with the help of internships, mentorships, and apprenticeships.
