Medovich Wins Community Service Scholarship

Windsor Central High School senior Andrea Medovich has made lending a helping hand part of her daily life. Now, that habit is providing Medovich some help of her own.

She has won a $20,000 award from the Frank Matola and Katherine J. Matola Scholarship Fund given to a graduating senior in Broome County who demonstrates documented community service to less fortunate individuals.
“I was very excited. I had both of my guidance counsellors in tears because they were excited too,” said Medovich.

Medovich spends part of her school days in Mrs. Gaige’s 8:1:1 special education class. She’s formed a special bond with one of Mrs. Gaige’s students, Derek.

“She’s very caring. She’ll meet him in the parking lot and help him walk into school. She will play games with him in the classroom and really help him navigate the day. She’ll walk with him. He looks forward to it. His time with her is his favorite part of the day,” said Mrs. Gaige.

“I let the students have fun. I’m down there every day working with them. My time there has helped me with my college decision and know what I want to do. I’m going to school to study special education to continue working with students like that,” said Medovich.

Medovich plans on studying special education at either SUNY Brockport or SUNY Cortland.

“I think she will do really well. She is passionate about helping kids,” said Mrs. Gaige. “She’s very compassionate.”
