Showing his Skills

Windsor Central High School senior Ryan Shaffer capped off an impressive run in Skills USA competitions as he helped his team to a second-place finish in the New York States 57th Leadership and Skills Championship Conference.
Shaffer, who studies residential electrical work at Broome-Tioga BOCES, worked with his teammates to frame a bathroom at the competition.

“Mostly I was helping the carpentry but when it came to electrical, I was running wire, putting in boxes and installing switches to control the lights,” said Shaffer.

Shaffer and his team made quick and quality work of the project, almost good enough to advance to the national Skills USA championships.

“I think it might have been scored out of 1,000, and we were 20 points below the first-place team,” said Shaffer. “It was actually wicked easy. It was fun. We were the first team done by half an hour. We had a really good group.”

Shaffer will study to become a lineman at a school in Georgia next spring for four months to earn his certification, preferring that career to one as an electrician.

“Linemen move around more. I don’t want to be stuck inside working in attics. I’d rather be outside working,” said Shaffer.
