Odyssey of the Mind
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem solving opportunities for students. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They bring their solutions to competition on the local, State and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and 25 other countries participate in the program. It has been a wonderful opportunity for Windsor students and for the last three years we have had teams compete at the State and World Level.

Bookshare
Bookshare® is an online library of digital books for people with print disabilities. It operates under an exception to U.S. copyright law which allows copyrighted digital books to be made available to people with qualifying disabilities. In addition, many publishers and authors have volunteered to provide Bookshare with access to their works. By requiring individuals to register as Members and provide a Proof of Disability, Bookshare ensures that only qualified individuals use the service.
Bookshare Members download books, textbooks and newspapers in a compressed, encrypted file. They then read the material using adaptive technology, typically software that reads the book aloud (text-to-speech) and/or displays the text of the book on a computer screen, or Braille access devices, such as refreshable Braille displays.
Through an award from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), Bookshare offers free memberships to U.S. schools and qualifying U.S. students.
Bookshare school accounts are available to WCSD students who have a print disability. Individual accounts for home use are also be available for free. Contact your son or daughter’s special education teacher for details. Visit the Bookshare website at www.bookshare.org to learn more. |

CHADD is a national organization with resources for children and adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
In our area we have a local chapter. The new Coordinator of Broome –Tioga CHADD is Kim Tait (broome-tioga@chadd.net).
Meetings will resume September 27th at Lourdes Hospital East Dining Room. A new format for meetings has been adopted in an attempt to reach the various needs of the community. The plan is to have one guest speaker or presentation each month from 7-8 and two break out discussion groups from 8-9, one for parents and one for adults with ADHD. You are welcome to come for the whole meeting, the speaker only, or just for the discussion groups. Some of the upcoming topics/speakers will be focusing on medication management, 504 accommodations, the positive effect of medication on the mind, executive function, and resources in the community. Kim is interested in any topic ideas and invites members to be guest speakers.
Like them on FACEbook at www.facebook.com/BroomeTiogaCHADD and be sure to check out their website www.chadd.net/132 for up to date information.
