Looking for Improvement
Superintendent’s Day may have taken Windsor teachers out of their classrooms, but not out of the classroom. They spent the day with colleagues from the Owego-Apalachin District in Owego to share best practices during an Innovation Summit.

“We are trying to build innovative cultures by sharing all of the great things our teachers are doing in the classroom, from instruction to Professional Learning Communities to creative use of technology,” said Dr. Jason Andrews, Superintendent of the Windsor Central School District.

“There are a lot of great things going on but districts are busy places and teachers are busy people. Being able to hold these summits allows people to share their innovations and thoughts,” said Owego-Apalachin Superintendent Corey Green.

Teachers spent the day attending their choice of dozens of workshops and presentations, including Understanding Students Who Struggle, Mental Health First Aid Refresher, Using STEAM Inspired Activities to Promote 21st Century Learning Skills, and Trauma Sensitive Teaching. Other workshops focused on building a positive school culture and enhancing career pathways for students.

“I’m always looking for ways to connect with kids. Breaking through barriers can be an ordeal. Innovation is a good thing,” said Windsor Special Education Teaching Assistant Rose Auld. “Someone is always going to have a different view. They might be doing some things we haven’t thought of. Picking their brain is a good thing.”

Some personnel from the Naples and Rochester districts, as well as Binghamton University, joined Windsor and Owego staff at the Innovation Summit.

“Sharing with one another is how we can all get better,” said Dr. Andrews.
