Visit from BU Women's Team Highlights First Day of Basketball Camp

A visit from members of the Binghamton University women’s basketball team highlighted the first day of the 2017 Windsor Basketball Camp. The Lady Bearcats helped run the 113 campers through drills and coach them in scrimmages.

“It’s great having the opportunity to work with the kids and have an impact on them,” said Binghamton University senior guard Jasmine Sina. “It’s important to engage with the community, and if we have any tips that help the kids, great.”

Campers such as Sofia Peret found those tips helpful. She learned about improving her footwork to better roll the ball off her fingers on a lay-up.

“They help you out if you’re having problems. They help you understand what you’re doing wrong and how to fix it. They're good guys, too,” said Peret, who is entering 9th grade.

“They showed us skills that we can practice,” said Cody Smith, who is entering 8th grade.

“The fundamentals are so important at this age. You build on them every year,” said Sina.

The appearance by the Lady Bearcats was about more than just x’s and o’s.

“What it showed them was what it looks like to be a college athlete. When you’re young you see the gear, the Nike Binghamton University shirts, all being part of a team. I know if I was their age I’d say, ‘Wow, I’d like to be like them wearing the gear, being teammates and giving back to the community,’” said Windsor Boys Basketball Coach Duncan Paddick.

Windsor coaches as well as seven junior varsity and varsity basketball players also run the camp, which is in its second year.

“I’m hoping the kids have fun, learn how to be part of a team and I’m hoping some kids fall in love with basketball,” said Paddick. “I think it’s great for them to see what Windsor basketball is and get excited about it.”

“We get practice from a coach who knows how to make you better and shows you what you can do at home if you want to grow your skill level,” said Peret.

The Windsor Basketball Camp runs Monday through Thursday from July 10-20 at Windsor Central High School.
