Summer Program Rundown: July 20

Summer program summary for July 20:

Windsor Strong Academy:
Windsor Strong Academy students continued to study what makes a community strong. Students in the environment and education groups held Q-&-A sessions with leaders in those fields today. Environment students heard from Chad Smith from Headwaters Corporation. Education students spoke to Windsor Central High School principal Jeff Salasny. You can read more about their visits here.

Knight Lights:
Human body week concluded with STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) students designing and building casts. The students learned casts must be strong, light, comfortable and water resistant. During the week students learned about various internal and external body parts and studied x-rays.

Next week is Earth Week at Knight Lights. Younger campers will take a trip to Cole Park on Wednesday with older students going on Thursday. Campers will learn about mapping and geocaching, the use of GPS to find hidden objects.

Wrestling Camp:
Today was the final day of Windsor’s one-week wrestling camp. During the week campers learned wrestling techniques, including the bar arm series. Athletes also mixed in other sports such as water polo and mat football to have fun and build camaraderie. The camp featured a mix of first-time wrestlers and more experienced grapplers.

“Hopefully they got a good grasp of the fundamental skills,” said Windsor Wrestling coach Jeff Nolan. “The goal is to either spark enthusiasm in the newcomers or let the older kids keep contact with wrestling over the summer.”

Basketball Camp:
Today was the final day of the two-week Windsor Basketball Camp. Today featured the 5-on-5 championship games. This comes after eight days of scrimmages, drills and skills stations.

“It was a huge success. We go more kids interested in basketball. They learned a lot of skills and drills they can work on. And they had fun which is most important,” said Windsor basketball coach Duncan Paddick.

Paddick said today’s games were examples of the improved ball movement, passing, defense and shooting the campers displayed over the past two weeks.
