Three WCHS Students Hold Drive for Those in Need

Three Windsor Central High School seniors are responsible for the latest contribution to help those in need in our area as Lexi Green, Philip Radicchi and Zach Adornato presented Windsor Human Development with hygiene products and $396 dollars in contributions.

Windsor Human Development is an agency of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, and one of the few food banks which also provides hygiene products for those in need.

“We wouldn’t be able to help people in the way that we do without you students and the entire school community,” Larry Sanford, Executive Director of Human Development, told the students. “Our success in meeting our mission is because of you.”

The SUNY Broome Introduction to Teaching and Education class went on a field trip to visit Human Development in September as part of its understanding of food insecurity. SUNY Broome Public Policy class students had to develop a plan to assist a community organization.

The three students set up a drive at Schneider’s Market in Kirkwood. Cashiers collected change from customers. Green, Radicchi and Adornato also collected hygiene products in front of the store on Sunday, October 28.

“The driving question was, ‘Do people need more than food to survive?’” said Radicchi.

“We thought that there were items that, if we went without, we’d definitely really notice it,” said Green.

A number of Windsor students are also taking part in Saturday’s Thanksgiving basket distribution at Windsor Human Development. 150 baskets will be handed out from 9am until noon. A Christmas basket distribution will take place on December 15.

Sanford also announced that Windsor CSD’s recent Fill the Bus food drive raised over 1,500 pounds of food. To put that in perspective, Windsor Human Development usually orders a minimum of 1,000 pounds of food to serve its clients over a two-week period.
