Mobile Dental Clinic Visiting Windsor Schools

The Lourdes Center for Oral Health Mobile Dental Clinic van made its first of six scheduled stops this spring at Windsor schools on Wednesday, April 19th at the campus of Palmer Elementary & Windsor Middle School.

The mobile clinic will return to the Palmer Elementary/Middle School campus on Monday, April 23. It will be at Bell Elementary on April 25 & April 30, and at Weeks Elementary on May 9 and May 16.

The services available at the mobile clinic include:

• Routine Cleanings
• Patient Education
• Fluoride Treatments
• Sealants
• X-rays
• Urgent Care
• Fillings
• Extractions

“We provide dental services to elementary schools in the Broome County area that meet certain criteria,” said Operations Manager Cindy D’Introno-Fitch. She says a rough estimate of that criteria is schools with at least half the student population eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

The Center for Oral Health targets patients who are uninsured, on Medicaid, or enrolled in New York's Child Health Plus and Family Health Plus programs, a population that is underserved for dental services in the Broome County area. No child is turned away because of a lack of insurance.

“We have a positive impact. But, it would be more positive if enrollment was higher,” said D’Introno-Fitch. “We’re here to provide the service but enrollment is down surprisingly.”

Six Windsor students received services from the mobile clinic on Wednesday. A total of 12 students returned the necessary paperwork to school nurse Karrie Mead. When the mobile clinic returns to the Palmer Elementary/Middle School campus on Monday, April 23, some who visited this week will receive follow-up care. Mead hopes others will take advantage of the service.

“I wish more people would take advantage of this. Parents don’t need to take time out from work. That’s why my little one uses it,” said Mead.
