Autumn Knight to Speak in New York City

Windsor Central High School freshman Autumn Knight has been chosen as one of three students in New York State to address the New York State Network for Youth Success in New York City. Knight will present about her experience in the Windsor Strong Academy this summer at the Power of 3:00 Summit on Summer Learning on November 14th.

“I’m shocked. I wasn’t expecting that. I thought I’d give (the application) a shot, try it out,” said Knight.

The organization selected Knight after she explained how Windsor Strong changed her life.

“Before Windsor Strong I was awkward and reluctant. I kept to myself. (The) reality is last year was such a struggle for me. I couldn’t talk to people and I hated myself for it,” said Knight. “At Windsor Strong I found my voice. When I was able to share my ideas about something as impactful as what makes a community strong I could feel my confidence growing. It also pushed me out of my comfort zone in good ways. I was recognized for my ideas and then encouraged to share them with the larger group.”

“This summer program ignited a passion inside of her. Since this program has ended we have seen Autumn continuing to give back to the community at community events by volunteering her time. I believe taking part in this summit will just continue to propel her into growth,” said Stef Olbrys, one of Autumn’s middle school teachers.

Like all students who took part in the Windsor Strong Academy, Knight presented her findings on what makes a community strong to community members at Binghamton University’s Downtown Center in Binghamton in July.

That experience will serve her well. At the Power of 3:00 Summit she will speak in front of state and local elected officials, media, advocates, and supporters of expanded learning throughout New York State.

“I want people to know you can change lives, you can make a difference in your community. It doesn’t have to be in a summer program. It can be anywhere every day. If you see someone sitting alone, ask if you can sit with them,” said Knight.

Windsor Strong is for middle school students so Knight is no longer eligible to attend. But, she has already agreed to mentor at Windsor Strong next summer.
