Dozens of Palmer Students Enjoy Walk-to-School Event

A “walking school bus” brought about 45 students to AF Palmer Elementary School Tuesday morning. The students, along with staff and parents, walked from the Windsor Community House down Main Street to the school. This kick-off event is part of a year-long initiative to encourage more students to walk and bike to school.

“The Walk-to-School Day is part of a bigger vision for Palmer to be a greater part of the Windsor community,” said Palmer Elementary Principal Jamie Bernard. “It’s a program where students and staff can come together.”

In the spring the school will target families that live within a mile of the school to encourage them to have their children walk to school as part of a “walking school bus.”

“We’ll have families meet families and give students a safe way to get to school,” said Bernard.

One reason this walk is possible is the Village of Windsor installed new sidewalks along the route to make the tip safer.

“When the community and the school can come together it’s a win-win,” said Bernard.
