9/11 Service Announcement Highlights First Day of School

The first day of school brought almost 1,700 students to five Windsor Central School District buildings, and one project that will impact those who protect us in our community and halfway around the world.

7th-grade students Hannah Tracy and Marissa Strawn announced details of a 9/11 service project to the Windsor Middle School student body Wednesday morning.

On Monday, September 11th, students will deliver cider and doughnuts to local first responders. They will also finish an ongoing collection and mail care packages to soldiers overseas.

“We want everyone to help. We want everyone to bring in stuff, not just one person,” said Strawn.

“I don’t think this is just another project we do. This one is big,” said Tracy.

Student organizers developed this project after researching what makes a community strong this summer at the Windsor Strong Academy at Binghamton University’s Downtown Center. Students met with members of law enforcement and the military as part of their research.

“The Windsor Strong Academy gave me confidence to go out and say something and put something like this together,” said Tracy.

Windsor Strong Academy students also took a tour of downtown Binghamton, seeing a number of memorials along the way.

“It changed the way I see things. I learned more about what’s happened in the world,” said Strawn.

You can help as well. Students are looking for the following items for the care packages: travel-size toiletry items, shampoo and body wash, beef jerky, entertainment items such as cards, books and movies, notes, letters and cards of thanks.

You can bring items to the Windsor Middle School Main Office or send in with your Windsor Middle School student to put in their advisory box no later than September 10th. Windsor Middle School received a grant from YSA (Youth Service America). This is funding the doughnuts, cider, transportation and shipping costs of the care packages.
