Rain Couldn't Stop 1st Windsor Strong Community Day

Rain and unseasonably cool temperatures didn’t stop 75 runners from taking part in the first-ever Windsor Strong Community Day 5K Run/Walk. Dozens of others also enjoyed performances by the Windsor Central High School Band, food and a teacher/student kickball game.

“I felt like it was great. There were more people than we expected,” said 7th grader Arielle Finch.

“I think the participation was good. If it wasn’t raining, we would have had more,” said 7th grader Hannah Strawn.

The forecast forced the cancellation of the teacher dunk tank, 3-on-3 basketball tournament and youth sports clinics, and transformed the teacher-student kickball tournament into a single game, albeit a soggy, mud-filled one.

“It was successful,” said Strawn. “We still had the kickball game, even if it was raining.”

There were health-related vendors at Klumpp Park as well, including the anti-tobacco program Reality Check, the Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier and the Lourdes Mobile Mammography Van. The High School Jazz Band, A Capella group and Knights of the Rock Table bands The Babes and Epiphany also performed. For pictures from the event, click here

The Community Day is the brainchild of students in the Windsor Strong Academy. Last summer they studied what elements make a community strong. With an emphasis on health, they developed the Community Day event. Planning has already begun for next year’s event.

“I had a hard time getting the kickball tournament together, so that’s something I’m going to work on for next year,” said Strawn.

“For the first year and bad weather, it was good numbers,” said 7th grader Lindsey Chase. “What about next year? Hopefully, no rain.”
