Taking the Keys

Safe choices come with a lot of benefits: health, security, piece of mind. But Windsor Central High School senior Sarah Salton’s came with one more – a new car.

Salton, who was the grand prize winner at Windsor’s Post Prom Party on May 12, picked up the keys to her 2003 Mazda 6, courtesy of Don’ Automotive and Gary’s U-Pull It.

“It was good because I can take my car to college next year. It’s good to take one that is reliable,” said Salton, who will attend Wells College in Aurora, NY in the fall.

The car is the grand prize at the Post Prom party, sponsored by the Windsor chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). The party is an alcohol-free event meant to give students a safe, fun alternative after prom.

“We’ve been doing it for 29 years. One of the parents we know came to us for a grand prize for the Post Prom Party. They needed something to keep the kids there until 5am. We’re in the car business, so guess what the prize was?” said Gary Beagell, owner of Gary’s U-Pull It.

A student from Chenango Valley High School will also win a new car, however CV’s Prom isn’t until June 1.

“I definitely think (the car) encourages kids to come to the party, along with the other prizes. It keeps kids from doing things that are dangerous,” said Salton.

“Everyone knows it’s working. It’s been a great run for us and we’re happy to keep doing it,” said Beagell.
