Stress Test

Summer is usually a time to de-stress for high school students, especially on the weekends. However, a Windsor trio recently decided to spend their Saturday adding some stress to their lives – and their studies.

On Saturday, July 7th, Kristen Launt, Kaitlin Pisano and Joshua Stone joined their AP Biology teacher Laurie Hulbert for a day-long workshop at Binghamton University. The Freshman Research Immersion Program hosted the workshop which was designed for high school teachers and students to see and experience how scientists tackle important questions.

Dr. Corinne Kiessling conducted the Neuroscience of Stress Workshop at her research lab at BU. The Windsor group spent the day learning how our bodies, and especially our brain, respond to stress. Activities included learning to use micropipettes, conducting experiments that tested human saliva for stress hormones and a sheep brain dissection. The Windsor group also presented its experiement with the other groups participating in the workshop.

"It was an interesting and fun day. We were able to use some science equipment in Dr. Kiessling's lab that you normally don't have the opportunity to use in a high school science lab," said Hulbert.
