Mystery Math

Using teamwork to overcome obstacles sounds like something that happens on the athletic field. But for some middle school students, it happened in math class.

8th-Grade math students did a math Breakout Activity, "Ace the Slope." Like an escape room, students worked in teams to to apply their math knowledge of linear relationships to solve puzzles and find more clues. By solving the challenges, students could determine lock combinations and could use the codes to unlock the final lockbox.

"I love seeing everyone including the non-traditional learners engaged and excited about doing math," said math teacher Christine Carle.

"Students were actively questioning, exploring and problem-solving their way to the finish. It was great to see the collaboration, excitement and confidence grow throughout the activity," said math teacher Christina Wahl.
